Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy – Summer and cars: auto fluid levels

Oil Change

Summer months bring with them the good times – barbecues with friends, days at the beach, and road trips. Road trips can bring on special stresses (and no, not so much for you), for your vehicle’s fluid levels.

A vehicle fully loaded with people, recreational equipment, coolers and pets is under heavy load and it can put strain on your ride, particularly if you’re blasting the air conditioning and sitting in traffic. For this reason, it’s important to make sure your vehicle’s fluids are topped off and lubricants are fresh.

Start by checking the engine oil when the vehicle has not been operated for at least fifteen minutes, which ensures all the oil will have drained back to the oil pan. Pull out the dip stick (when the vehicle is off), wipe the oil off of it with a rag or paper towel, reinsert, remove again, and see where the level is.

On most cars, the mark between “add” and “full” is one quart. If it’s somewhere in between, we recommend topping off with the appropriate grade and quality of oil so it reaches the “full” mark. Check your owner’s manual if you are unsure of what kind of oil to use. We recommend keeping a fresh, sealed, quart of oil in the vehicle for unplanned top-offs.

Another easy thing to check and fill is your washer fluid. Open the hood, identify the washer fluid intake, and fill to the brim with an appropriate fluid. Most reservoirs hold about a gallon. If you have room in your vehicle for a spare gallon of washer fluid, you may find it convenient to have it on hand for refills.

Other fluids to consider are: automatic or manual transmission fluid, differential fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and, of course, coolant, which works extra hard during the summer. Most of these require the care of a skilled technician to check the levels and quality, so be sure to have them checked by your service technician regularly.

If you’re unsure of the level and condition of your car’s fluids, come on in to Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy for a full fluid analysis and top off. Our service department can be reached at 888-313-1770. To learn more, visit our website. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable summer, and look forward to seeing you soon.

2013 Customized Chrysler Draw Awards Illustrate the Quality of Mopar Parts

Chrysler Mopar

Highlights from the 2013 customized draw awards held by Chrysler illustrate that Mopar parts and accessories, which we at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy use, are top-notch. The awards, begun in July, spotlight classic, or modern-day cars customized and restored by their owners with Mopar parts in exceptional ways.

Award Highlights

Chrysler’s Customized and Performance Vehicle Program recently selected “Top Eliminator” winners. Miles Watsko took the first prize with his 1964 Plymouth Savoy. His restored car won the first “Top Eliminator” award at the “Mopars in the Park” event July 9 in Farmington, Minn.

The judging panel selected Watsko based on criteria that relate to the program’s goal to modify or preserve Mopar vehicles. The criteria include Mopar content and overall appearance of a vehicle, according to a recent Chrysler post. Watsko’s Savoy is a classic muscle car that features the 426 HEMI race engine. Interestingly, the 1964 Savoy was the first car that Mopar gave that engine type.

Additional winners’ selections occur at Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, the Indianapolis NHRA US Nationals, and online; the total number of award recipients, counting Watsko, is four.

The Proper Materials

When your vehicle’s air conditioner is in the hands of our experts, our Technicians can properly diagnose and repair the system to factory specifications. If you try to tackle the issue on your own, you risk causing additional issues which could increase the cost of repair. Even if you’re A/C system is running well we recommend a yearly inspection to prevent any possible issues in the future.

Servicing Procedure

Our Technicians start by measuring the current pressures in the A/C system. When your interior does not feel as chilly as it once did, the pressure level is likely below specification.

The source of low pressure is likely a leak in the system. To diagnose the issue, we employ several methods as necessary to determine the cause of the leak. These include visual, electronic and tracer dyes that can pinpoint the small leaks. Once the cause is found you will be given a full description of the necessary repair.

Refilling the refrigerant can be complex. Professional equipment is needed to properly monitor pressures to determine not only the proper level but component operation as well. Lubricant must also be added when necessary to keep the compressor operating properly in the future.

In Troy servicing your air conditioner is easy when you come in to Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy. We can safely service and maintain the system for you. Summer heat is here and a properly working A/C system that works to factory specifications will help you feel cool and comfortable as you drive.

Spring Maintenance Tips for Your Windshield

Windshield Tips

April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. But here in Troy, the month of May can bring its own share of rain showers. In order to be a safe driver when the weather gets wet, you need to have a healthy windshield.

At Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy we know that properly working windshield wipers are a must. Not only do they make your commute safer and more enjoyable, but here in Michigan, it’s the law. Michigan vehicle code states that all vehicles (with a few exceptions) must have fully operating windshield wipers in good working order.

When giving your car a good once-over for spring, make sure that your wiper blades are properly clearing your field of vision. If not, one or both wiper blades may need to be replaced. Fortunately, this is typically an easy and inexpensive fix.

A product like Diamon Fusion, which is endorsed by the U.S. Military can also help improve your driving visibility during rainy season. Application by our experts is simple. This product can greatly improve visibility in wet weather, and — as an added bonus — it also makes it easier to remove bugs and mud from your windshield.

However, windshield wipers and products like Diamon Fusion are only effective if the windshield itself is in good shape. If your windshield has nicks or cracks, this may be the time to have it repaired or replaced. You may be able to get by with a nick or small crack for a while (given that it doesn’t obstruct your vision), but both affect the integrity of your windshield and shouldn’t be ignored for long.

Depending on vehicle make and model, a windshield replacement can run you anywhere from $350 to $1,300. Not a cheap fix, even on the low end. Fortunately, many insurance policies cover windshield replacement, at least in part. Check with your insurance company for details on your policy. Keep in mind that prices can also vary widely from one dealership or auto glass specialty shop to the next.

How to change a flat tire

How to change a flat tireChanging a flat tire is never an enviable job, but it is a useful skill to have and will make you a hero if you can execute it. We here at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy are happy to tell you how to do it.

Keep an eye on your spare tire’s air pressure. Ask us to check it next time you’re in, or check the air pressure yourself next time you’re at the gas station. You don’t want to get a flat only to find you have a deflated or under-inflated spare.

First, please put safety first. Not all places are appropriate for changing a tire. For instance, if you’re stranded on a highway off-ramp, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and call a tow truck to move you someplace safe or let them change your tire for you.

Set your vehicle in gear if it’s a manual or park if it’s an automatic, and set your parking brake. Locate and remove your spare tire. It’s usually somewhere in the trunk for sedans and wagons. For trucks and SUVs, it may be underneath the back of the vehicle. Our Caravans and Town and Country minivans have them hidden under the floor, under the front seats. If you can’t locate it, check your manual.

You should have a tire iron in your trunk, along with your jack. Remove your wheel cover or hub cap, and use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts, one at a time, about one-half turn. It’s important that the wheel in question be on the ground for this part.

Once the lug nuts are loose, ensure that the surface underneath your jack is solid. If it’s muddy or spongy, move your car to firmer ground. Refer to your owner’s manual to find out where the jack points are. Once you’ve determined the right place to put the jack, proceed to jack the vehicle up.

Loosen the lug nuts the rest of the way, remove them, and then the wheel. Replace it with your spare, and gently thread the lug nuts back on, by hand so you don’t damage the threads. From there, tighten them with the tire iron so they’re snug, and lower the vehicle to the ground.

Once your tire is in the air, apply about 100 pounds of torque to each lug nut, in a criss-cross pattern. If you weigh 150 pounds, think of using about two-thirds of your weight, pressing about 12 inches up the handle of the tire iron.

Remember: Spare tires are just that; they’re usually rated for 50 miles at no more than 50 mph, so it’s best to take your flat in for repair at the earliest possible time.

We wish you safe motoring, and come down and see us at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy for a tire check!

How to make your home and vehicle more environmentally friendly

Earth Day - Green carsWith Earth Day in our thoughts, we at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy would like to share a few tips on how to make your home and vehicle more environmentally friendly.

Even though most of us don’t have the opportunity to give up driving or move into extremely earth-friendly homes, there are plenty of affordable ways to make your daily choices in transportation and home more eco-friendly.

Let’s start with your home. The best way to make your home more environmentally friendly is to reduce the amount of energy you use for heating and cooling. Here are some tips:

  • Lower the thermostat in the winter, and keep your air conditioning use in the summer at a minimum.  A few degrees difference could save you hundreds, and reduce your oil or gas consumption in the winter and electricity consumption in the summer.
  • Keep shades drawn in the summer during the day, as it will act to insulate from the sun and outdoor heat.
  • Use a humidifier in the winter, as some humidity will help your furnace operate more efficiently and keep your family more comfortable. In the winter, close your shades at night to reduce cold coming in off the windows.
  • Try a fan instead of an air conditioner. Sometimes a breeze will keep you cool so you don’t need to use an energy-hogging appliance like an air conditioner.
  • Keep your air conditioner and furnace in top shape by having them inspected and cleaned annually. They’ll last longer and operate more efficiently.
  • Use weather stripping and caulking to seal drafts.

Other tips for your home are using low environmental-impact cleaning products, using a clothesline instead of a dryer, being an eco-conscious shopper, and recycling wherever you can.

To make your vehicle use more environmentally friendly, minimize trips by carpooling and combining errands, and use alternate modes of transportation where you can. A bicycle is a great way of getting around, is good exercise and a lot of fun.

Come see us to find out if your vehicle is in top shape. Is the air filter clean? Are the spark plugs within their service life? Is the oxygen sensor doing what it is supposed to? How about your tires? Under-inflated tires alone can reduce your fuel economy by 3 to 10%.

From all of us at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy, happy Earth Day to you and your family!
