Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy – Summer and cars: auto fluid levels

Oil Change

Summer months bring with them the good times – barbecues with friends, days at the beach, and road trips. Road trips can bring on special stresses (and no, not so much for you), for your vehicle’s fluid levels.

A vehicle fully loaded with people, recreational equipment, coolers and pets is under heavy load and it can put strain on your ride, particularly if you’re blasting the air conditioning and sitting in traffic. For this reason, it’s important to make sure your vehicle’s fluids are topped off and lubricants are fresh.

Start by checking the engine oil when the vehicle has not been operated for at least fifteen minutes, which ensures all the oil will have drained back to the oil pan. Pull out the dip stick (when the vehicle is off), wipe the oil off of it with a rag or paper towel, reinsert, remove again, and see where the level is.

On most cars, the mark between “add” and “full” is one quart. If it’s somewhere in between, we recommend topping off with the appropriate grade and quality of oil so it reaches the “full” mark. Check your owner’s manual if you are unsure of what kind of oil to use. We recommend keeping a fresh, sealed, quart of oil in the vehicle for unplanned top-offs.

Another easy thing to check and fill is your washer fluid. Open the hood, identify the washer fluid intake, and fill to the brim with an appropriate fluid. Most reservoirs hold about a gallon. If you have room in your vehicle for a spare gallon of washer fluid, you may find it convenient to have it on hand for refills.

Other fluids to consider are: automatic or manual transmission fluid, differential fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and, of course, coolant, which works extra hard during the summer. Most of these require the care of a skilled technician to check the levels and quality, so be sure to have them checked by your service technician regularly.
