Make Sure Kids’ Car Seats are Installed Properly

Kids Seat belts

Automobile accidents continue to rank as the number one killer of kids ages 1 to 12 in the United States. Using a safety seat correctly helps protect them from harm.

With that in mind, here are eight helpful infant car seat installation tips from your friends at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy.

  1. Decide between a rear-facing-only safety seat or a convertible one that allows you to buy one seat and adjust it as your child grows.
  2. Read the installation instructions in the car seat manual and in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  3. Choose the most appropriate location and installation method for the vehicle and your child’s weight using the manuals. You typically have two options for installation method: using only a seatbelt or also a Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system if present in your vehicle. Your owner’s manual will include that information.
  4. Ensure there are no twists in the seatbelt straps once you install the car seat.
  5. Check the tightness of straps. They should not move more than 1 inch. If they do, put pressure on the seat to further tighten straps.
  6. Adjust the recline of the seat according to car seat manual instructions or the indicator on the seat if present.
  7. Make sure all straps are in the appropriate position once you place your child in the seat. For rear-facing seats, the chest clip should be at armpit level, and the straps should be in the slots at or below your child’s shoulders. For forward-facing seats, the chest clip should be at armpit level, and the straps should be in the slots at or above your child’s shoulders.
  8. Make sure all straps are tight enough against your child and there are no twists. There should be little slack.

If you opted for a convertible car seat, get additional tips on how to continue its use safely from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Parents Central website. There you will find tips specific to ages, weights and stages of a convertible car seat.

We hope you find these infant car seat installation tips from Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy helpful. If at any time you wish to upgrade your vehicle to meet the needs of your growing family, please stop by to learn more about the safety measures of our many available models.

The 2013 Dodge Dart the Coolest Compact on the Road for Less than $16,000

2013 Dodge Dart

Think buying a new vehicle has to set your budget back? Think again. The 2013 Dodge Dart is proof that a high-quality vehicle doesn’t have to put you in debt. The new Dodge Dart is best in class in safety, technology, and customization options and offers up to 41 MPG highway. Amazingly, it does all this while retaining an impressively low price tag—starting at just $15,995. No wonder Kelley Blue Book has named it the “Coolest New Car Under $18,000.”

Let’s compare the best-in-class 2013 Dodge Dart to its competitors, which include the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, among others. The Dart ties for lowest price point in the compact car class, and it’s at the top of the list in fuel economy. This impressive compact specimen also offers the most safety features, including Smart Beam HID headlamps, 10 standard airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, and blind spot monitoring. In the parking lot, it has your back with Rear Cross Path Detection and a Rear Park Assist & Camera. The majority of competitors offer few of these technologies, making the Dodge Dart the safest compact on the road.

Safety and fuel economy are key, but you also want your car to be comfortable. The 2013 Dodge Dart is a headlamp above the competition in this area as well. It offers you the most room to stretch out (97.2 cubic feet of total passenger room). A heated steering wheel keeps you warm in winter, and Dual Zone Auto Temperature Control lets you customize your car’s climate to your unique comfort level—whether you run hot or cold. Other cool interior features include an illuminated floating island bezel, ambient lighting, and accent stitching on the seats and dash.

The 2013 Dodge Dart also leads the way in exterior options. Projector headlamps and LED stop/turn tail lamps—both scarcely available across the class—come standard in the Dart. Customize by adding integrated dual exhaust, impressive 18-inch wheels and rain-sensing wipers (how smart is that?!). The new Dart is available in 12 colors (again outshining its competitors), so you can express your unique style every time you get behind the wheel.

For all of you tech junkies out there, the 2013 Dodge Dart is an obvious choice in the compact car class. Come and visit us at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy to check out the 8.4-inch touchscreen display and premium sound (it’s got 10 speakers compared to the class average of six). But to really experience the best today’s technology has to offer, you’ll want to further customize your interior with an easy-to-view seven-inch TFT display and convenient Keyless Go Pushbutton Start.

Spring Maintenance Tips for Your Windshield

Windshield Tips

April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. But here in Troy, the month of May can bring its own share of rain showers. In order to be a safe driver when the weather gets wet, you need to have a healthy windshield.

At Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy we know that properly working windshield wipers are a must. Not only do they make your commute safer and more enjoyable, but here in Michigan, it’s the law. Michigan vehicle code states that all vehicles (with a few exceptions) must have fully operating windshield wipers in good working order.

When giving your car a good once-over for spring, make sure that your wiper blades are properly clearing your field of vision. If not, one or both wiper blades may need to be replaced. Fortunately, this is typically an easy and inexpensive fix.

A product like Diamon Fusion, which is endorsed by the U.S. Military can also help improve your driving visibility during rainy season. Application by our experts is simple. This product can greatly improve visibility in wet weather, and — as an added bonus — it also makes it easier to remove bugs and mud from your windshield.

However, windshield wipers and products like Diamon Fusion are only effective if the windshield itself is in good shape. If your windshield has nicks or cracks, this may be the time to have it repaired or replaced. You may be able to get by with a nick or small crack for a while (given that it doesn’t obstruct your vision), but both affect the integrity of your windshield and shouldn’t be ignored for long.

Depending on vehicle make and model, a windshield replacement can run you anywhere from $350 to $1,300. Not a cheap fix, even on the low end. Fortunately, many insurance policies cover windshield replacement, at least in part. Check with your insurance company for details on your policy. Keep in mind that prices can also vary widely from one dealership or auto glass specialty shop to the next.

How to change a flat tire

How to change a flat tireChanging a flat tire is never an enviable job, but it is a useful skill to have and will make you a hero if you can execute it. We here at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy are happy to tell you how to do it.

Keep an eye on your spare tire’s air pressure. Ask us to check it next time you’re in, or check the air pressure yourself next time you’re at the gas station. You don’t want to get a flat only to find you have a deflated or under-inflated spare.

First, please put safety first. Not all places are appropriate for changing a tire. For instance, if you’re stranded on a highway off-ramp, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and call a tow truck to move you someplace safe or let them change your tire for you.

Set your vehicle in gear if it’s a manual or park if it’s an automatic, and set your parking brake. Locate and remove your spare tire. It’s usually somewhere in the trunk for sedans and wagons. For trucks and SUVs, it may be underneath the back of the vehicle. Our Caravans and Town and Country minivans have them hidden under the floor, under the front seats. If you can’t locate it, check your manual.

You should have a tire iron in your trunk, along with your jack. Remove your wheel cover or hub cap, and use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts, one at a time, about one-half turn. It’s important that the wheel in question be on the ground for this part.

Once the lug nuts are loose, ensure that the surface underneath your jack is solid. If it’s muddy or spongy, move your car to firmer ground. Refer to your owner’s manual to find out where the jack points are. Once you’ve determined the right place to put the jack, proceed to jack the vehicle up.

Loosen the lug nuts the rest of the way, remove them, and then the wheel. Replace it with your spare, and gently thread the lug nuts back on, by hand so you don’t damage the threads. From there, tighten them with the tire iron so they’re snug, and lower the vehicle to the ground.

Once your tire is in the air, apply about 100 pounds of torque to each lug nut, in a criss-cross pattern. If you weigh 150 pounds, think of using about two-thirds of your weight, pressing about 12 inches up the handle of the tire iron.

Remember: Spare tires are just that; they’re usually rated for 50 miles at no more than 50 mph, so it’s best to take your flat in for repair at the earliest possible time.

We wish you safe motoring, and come down and see us at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy for a tire check!

How to make your home and vehicle more environmentally friendly

Earth Day - Green carsWith Earth Day in our thoughts, we at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy would like to share a few tips on how to make your home and vehicle more environmentally friendly.

Even though most of us don’t have the opportunity to give up driving or move into extremely earth-friendly homes, there are plenty of affordable ways to make your daily choices in transportation and home more eco-friendly.

Let’s start with your home. The best way to make your home more environmentally friendly is to reduce the amount of energy you use for heating and cooling. Here are some tips:

  • Lower the thermostat in the winter, and keep your air conditioning use in the summer at a minimum.  A few degrees difference could save you hundreds, and reduce your oil or gas consumption in the winter and electricity consumption in the summer.
  • Keep shades drawn in the summer during the day, as it will act to insulate from the sun and outdoor heat.
  • Use a humidifier in the winter, as some humidity will help your furnace operate more efficiently and keep your family more comfortable. In the winter, close your shades at night to reduce cold coming in off the windows.
  • Try a fan instead of an air conditioner. Sometimes a breeze will keep you cool so you don’t need to use an energy-hogging appliance like an air conditioner.
  • Keep your air conditioner and furnace in top shape by having them inspected and cleaned annually. They’ll last longer and operate more efficiently.
  • Use weather stripping and caulking to seal drafts.

Other tips for your home are using low environmental-impact cleaning products, using a clothesline instead of a dryer, being an eco-conscious shopper, and recycling wherever you can.

To make your vehicle use more environmentally friendly, minimize trips by carpooling and combining errands, and use alternate modes of transportation where you can. A bicycle is a great way of getting around, is good exercise and a lot of fun.

Come see us to find out if your vehicle is in top shape. Is the air filter clean? Are the spark plugs within their service life? Is the oxygen sensor doing what it is supposed to? How about your tires? Under-inflated tires alone can reduce your fuel economy by 3 to 10%.

From all of us at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy, happy Earth Day to you and your family!
