Make Sure Kids’ Car Seats are Installed Properly

Kids Seat belts

Automobile accidents continue to rank as the number one killer of kids ages 1 to 12 in the United States. Using a safety seat correctly helps protect them from harm.

With that in mind, here are eight helpful infant car seat installation tips from your friends at Suburban Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Troy.

  1. Decide between a rear-facing-only safety seat or a convertible one that allows you to buy one seat and adjust it as your child grows.
  2. Read the installation instructions in the car seat manual and in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  3. Choose the most appropriate location and installation method for the vehicle and your child’s weight using the manuals. You typically have two options for installation method: using only a seatbelt or also a Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system if present in your vehicle. Your owner’s manual will include that information.
  4. Ensure there are no twists in the seatbelt straps once you install the car seat.
  5. Check the tightness of straps. They should not move more than 1 inch. If they do, put pressure on the seat to further tighten straps.
  6. Adjust the recline of the seat according to car seat manual instructions or the indicator on the seat if present.
  7. Make sure all straps are in the appropriate position once you place your child in the seat. For rear-facing seats, the chest clip should be at armpit level, and the straps should be in the slots at or below your child’s shoulders. For forward-facing seats, the chest clip should be at armpit level, and the straps should be in the slots at or above your child’s shoulders.
  8. Make sure all straps are tight enough against your child and there are no twists. There should be little slack.

If you opted for a convertible car seat, get additional tips on how to continue its use safely from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Parents Central website. There you will find tips specific to ages, weights and stages of a convertible car seat.
